Right, first things first, watch the video at the top of this text as the rest of this article is based on that video and if you watch the video after it won’t make as much sense and read the rest of the article will be a waste.
I will not proceed as if you have watched the video and if you haven’t then you’re only spoiling it for yourself!
Virtually all of the people who have viewed the video will not find every single letter ‘f’.
It’s strange isn’t it?
The one reason why it is strange is that if you were to read the paragraph out loud you would see all of the letter ‘f’s present otherwise you would not be able to recognise the words.
Why is that?
Well one of the reason is that your brain goes on auto-pilot when look at the words. It doesn’t need to see the letters in a word in order to work out what it is.
Think of letters as being a set of symbols that have been given a meaning. Then through language we give those symbols likely order. ‘I’ before ‘e’, etc. Therefore, our brains can make a lot of assumptions about words and also the structure of sentences based on what words are likely to follow.
Out of the paragraph the letters that are missed out are normally the connective words like ‘of’.
When on the hunt for the letter ‘f’ the mind goes to the big words and not the counting words which are subconsciously perceived as having less value, especially due to their size.
Combine these factors and your mind starts to make it difficult to even find something as simple as a letter, pretty cool, huh?
